Overview

Our 12v budget wind turbine kit includes all the elements that will help you on your way to generating your own electricity.
It will by no means become your sole electricity supply but will contribute to your energy needs.

System

Our systems comprise of 6 major parts (as shown below). We have hand-picked a compatible piece of equipment for each part. This means that the system has the best parts available for the price.

It also means that there are no real bottle necks, meaning that you're not paying for a component that is being held back by the rest of the system.

Components

1: Turbine - Rutland 503

Rutland 503

The Rutland 503 is an ideal entry level turbine that is capable of producing 60w (This would continuously power approx 5 or 6 energy saving lightbulbs).
However, as the energy is going to be stored in a battery you can save this up and use it on higher power equipment.

2: Rigging Kit

Rutland 503 - Rigging Kit

We have provided a Rigging Kit that can be used to temporarily mount the turbine in a suitable location.

Please note: Because we have no control over how and where turbines are mounted it is your responsibility to ensure that turbines are mounted suitably and in a responsible fashion. We do not recommend that you use this kit fpr permanent mounting unless you intend to concrete the components in to the ground.

3: Cable - 2 Core - 10m

2 Core Cable - 2.5mm

This kits comes with 10m of cable that runs between the turbine and the regulator.
Depending on your setup we can supply you with additional lengths of cable to run between the regulator/battery/inverter although ordinarily these should be placed together and won't need additional cable.
Please note: We don't recommend more than 10m between the turbine and the regulator otherwise the system will become very inefficient. (DC voltage reduces through the cable's natural resistance).

4: Regulator - HRS 503

Rutland 503

The HRS503 is specifically designed for use with the turbine in this kit (Rutland 503).

It's the regulator's job to ensure that the battery is charged correctly and safely. It also prevents overcharge of the battery and slows the turbine down as the batteries become fully charged.

5: Battery - AGM 55

Battery - AGM 55Ah

The battery we've chosen for this system is an AGM 55. If you're technically minded this means that it is an Absorbed Glass Mat battery with a 55 Amp hour rating. If you're not, basically it means that it's a robust, maintenance-free battery that is capable of storing a small amount of charge.
To give you an idea of how much power it can store, if it was fully charged it could power five energy-saving lightbulbs for approx 8 hours.
Battery Clips also included.

6: Inverter - Genius 150W

Inverter - 150W

The inverter's job is to turn the DC current in to AC current that powers household appliances.
To ensure that the battery isn't depleted too quickly, we've chosen a 150W inverter for this system.
This means that you can plug in appliances upto 150w. Examples of these include: Bench Grinder, Games Consoles, Stereo, Television, Hand-Held Electric Mixer, Phone Charger or it could be hooked in to a lighting ring to power up to 13 energy-saving lightbulbs.

Planning Permission

The beauty of the Free Standing kits are that if you're only planning for the structure to be you won't require planning permission. However, if you are planning a more permanent installation please check with your local Planning Office.

Disclaimer

  • Structure: Because we have no control over how and where turbines are mounted it is your responsibility to ensure that turbines are mounted on suitable structures and in a responsible fashion. For this reason we do not include any mounting brackets or additional mounting poles to attach to your structure (the only things that you'll need but that aren't included). However, these can be picked up easily from any hardware store.
  • Place – please make sure wind turbine will be installed out of reach of children in safe and windy localisation.
  • Please note: The output of a wind turbine is totally dependent on the windspeed. Wind conditions can vary enormously, particularly in a built-up area. For a user to obtain a good estimate of likely performance it is necessary to monitor the actual windspeed at the location for a period of time.
